In yesterday’s post, I shared some ideas on how we as individual Canadians can contribute to surviving and winning the economic war which Trump has forced upon us. While all of those actions, along with many more that you should collectively come up with, are important, actually winning that war will require the kind of unity and quality of leadership which we haven’t seen for too many years. This post focusses on what we must do towards obtaining the leadership which we now so desperately need:
1. First and foremost, effectively standing on guard for Canada requires that we be united. Starting immediately, we must collectively commit to zero tolerance for the divisive toxic partisanship which has undermined our faith in our leaders. Through our voting intentions, we must render continued refusal to engage in polite, constructive debate with members of other parties the kiss of death for political careers.
2. Second, we need a federal government in which every MP is both free and able to openly represent the interests of all of their constituents, not just their narrow voter bases and, especially, not just their personal career prospects in the sense of serving as mouthpieces for scripts dictated by the unelected political operatives in their respective leaders’ offices.
3. Third, we need a strong Cabinet which comprises the best minds and broadest possible real-world life experience available in the MP pool, with representation from every province and territory. We can no longer afford personal loyalty to a particular leader being a determinant factor in choosing Ministers.
4. Fourth, we need to give our next government the strongest possible mandate to face down the challenges that Trump will be sending our way, which means that virtually every Canadian should cast their ballot in the coming federal election.
The above imperatives would be best served by a coalition national unity cabinet with every party represented. While coalitions have been rare in Canadian history, they are entirely legitimate under our constitution. Facing as we now are the greatest threat ever to our nation and its future, it’s time to enable Canadians to freely vote into office the best, brightest and most committed among us to stand on guard for Canada and our people.
