Ms. Mooney is a 30-something Canadian living in Vancouver. She was essentially kidnapped by US authorities in the sense of having been arbitrarily thrown into a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centre while seeking a visa extension at the San Diego visa office. Her story of that nightmare experience was published in The Guardian [Google “guardian janet mooney detained”]. It is well worth reading by all Canadians in that it provides a sobering preview of the fearful lives we could be leading with our human rights essentially stripped away should Trump achieve his stated objective of annexing Canada.
If you think about it, you will recognize that Canada would never become a 51st state, for these three obvious reasons:
- There is no constitutional path for our governments to join another country even were Canadians to be in favour;
- There is no way that a majority of Canadians would vote to joint the United States even were the question put to them; and, even more to the point,
- There is absolutely no way that the Republicans and their monied backers would ever accept the addition of 30 million more Democratic-leading voters.
Therefore, should Trump choose to take Canada, it would be by overwhelming military force; i.e. an invasion. Canada would be a territory governed by Washington in Washington’s interests, not ours. We would lack any say in our and our children’s futures and would have no rights apart beyond what our occupiers chose to grant us (and could take away at whim). Essentially, all Canadians would be subjected to the fear and helplessness which Ms. Mooney experienced during those two awful weeks.
The only way to avoid invasion or, in a worst case, to regain our sovereignty would be to make it consistently unprofitable for the occupiers. A group of Kingstonians is currently planning rallies and other public events and activities to show solidarity in rejecting takeover and standing up for the Canada we love.
