The fear factor

Ron, a founder of Kingston Stands with Canada, is a retired foreign service officer and IT consultant who led major public-sector projects. A former president of both federal and provincial Liberal Associations in Kingston, he is now non-partisan and writing a how-to guide on restoring Canadaโ€™s representative democracy.

Last Saturday, I met with a dozen other Kingstonians (including a City Councillor, a former mayoralty candidate and a former school trustee) for a brainstorming session on how best to go about organizing local public gatherings to collectively affirm Canada’s sovereignty in the face of President Trump’s attacks on our nation. Those of them who had recently been in touch with US friends and colleagues shared a disturbing observation. Their US counterparts were overwhelmingly against Trump’s threats to Canada as well as his undermining of US democracy but felt that they could not safely speak out for fear of suffering professional or other consequences.

Democracy is all about the freedom to publicly speak truth free from well-founded fear of reprisal. Historically, democracy dies when would-be dictators/autocrats are allowed to get away with weaponizing fear in order to obtain a stranglehold on power. By that token, the USA is already well down the path of ceasing to be the successful democracy that its founding fathers bequeathed to future generations. If we do not wish ourselves and our children to live lives of fear, it is critical that we as Canadians maintain our integrity by standing up to a threatened US takeover of our precious sovereignty in whatever guise.

We concluded our meeting yesterday with a decision to expand our group with sufficient additional volunteers to be in a position to organize an initial Kingston stand-up-for-Canada gathering within the next few weeks. If you might consider participating or are part of a similar group with which we could collaborate, please send us an email at standupforcanadakingston@gmail.com. Please indicate whether you would like to join our steering committee, potentially volunteer to help staff our events, or just be kept informed about future events. We will hopefully have a website relatively soon, but one step at a time. You can also help by widely sharing this post and encourage those people to do the same.

I’ve been finding it increasingly difficult to write something new on the worsening US/Canada divide because I hate being negative all the time, yet finding something more positive to say is like the proverbial grasping at straws. So check out this hopeful post by Heather Delaney Reese.

Martin Wolf warns about the global state of democracy

In his recent article “We must not underestimate the peril for democracy,” Financial Times columnist Martin Wolf has issued a stark warning about the global state of democracy. International monitoring groups still rank Canada among the worldโ€™s strongest democracies, yet Canadaโ€™s sovereignty, public institutions, and civic culture require vigilance and active defence.

Canada Gains a Little More Time to Unify

Canada Gains a Little More Time to Unify

The globally de-stabilizing, illegal attack on Iran by Trumpโ€™s USA and Netanyahuโ€™s Israel may have one positive benefit. It may take other countries openly coveted by Trump off his immediate radar screen. Yet when Canadaโ€™s very existence is at stake, all of us need to make it a priority to stand unified against external threatsโ€”and internal threats fueled by external actors. Period.

Accountability for an atrocity against children

Accountability for an atrocity against children

From my perspective, one of the most disturbing aspects of the February 28, 2026 bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh girlsโ€™ elementary school in Minab, southern Iran, has been the limited attention it received in Canadian and much of the American media. If the attack is not understood as part of a formal act of war, it is difficult to see it as anything other than the mass killing of civilians โ€” in this case, children. This raises a troubling question: why has media coverage been so restrained?
